(United Kingdom): I would like to thank the Secretary-General for his report on options for the prosecution of persons involved in piracy off the coast of Somalia (S/2010/394).

I now give the floor to the President of the Security Council, His Excellency Sir Mark Lyall Grant, to introduce the report of the Security Council.

Let me also thank the Council’s President for the month of November, Sir Mark Lyall Grant, for introducing the report of the Security Council (A/65/2).

I would also like to thank Ambassador Sir Mark Lyall Grant, current President of the Council, for his presentation of the annual report of that body (A/65/2) at the 48th meeting.

Sir Mark Lyall Grant (United Kingdom): The United Kingdom is appalled by the decision of Russia and China to veto the draft resolution (S/2012/538) aimed at bringing an end to the bloodshed in Syria and at creating the conditions for a meaningful political process.

I would also like to express our gratitude to the President of the Security Council, Ambassador Lyall Grant, for his introduction of the annual report of the Security Council (A/65/2).

(United Kingdom): I join others in thanking Margot Wallström and Hervé Ladsous for their briefings, and Amina Megheirbi for her moving words on behalf of the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security.

(United Kingdom): I would like to join my colleagues in welcoming Prime Minister Bellerive to the Security Council today and to extend again the United Kingdom’s sincere condolences to the people of Haiti for the loss of over 200,000 lives in January’s devastating earthquake.

(United Kingdom): I thank the Secretary-General for his report (S/2012/50) and both Patricia O’Brien and Yuri Fedotov for their comprehensive briefing this morning.

(San Marino): I would like to thank the Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom, Ambassador Sir Mark Lyall Grant, for his introduction to the report of the Security Council (A/65/2), and the Nigerian mission for its work in preparing the document.

I would also like to extend my appreciation to Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant of the United Kingdom for introducing the report in his capacity as President of the Council.

(United Kingdom): I would like to thank the delegations of Germany and Afghanistan for their commitment and energy in steering the negotiations of today’s draft resolution on Afghanistan (A/66/L.10).

(United Kingdom): I would like to join Security Council colleagues in welcoming the President of Serbia, Mr. Boris Tadić, and the Foreign Minister of Kosovo, Mr. Skender Hyseni, to the Council Chamber today, together with the Secretary-General’s Special Representative, Mr. Lamberto Zannier.

(United Kingdom): It is with regret that we have today supported the adoption of resolution 1997 (2011) on the withdrawal of the United Nations Mission in the Sudan (UNMIS).

(United Kingdom): I should like to thank the Secretary-General for his report (S/2010/127) and Under-Secretary-General Alain Le Roy for his comprehensive briefing this morning.

As for the report before us, I would like first of all to thank the President of the Security Council for the month of November, Ambassador Mark Lyall Grant, Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom, for his informative presentation of the report.

We are grateful to the President for his personal engagement in the reform process, to Ambassador Tanin for his continued efforts in leading the intergovernmental negotiations, and to the current President of the Security Council, Ambassador Lyall Grant, for introducing the report of the Council.

(United Kingdom): In supporting resolution 2003 (2011), extending the mandate of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID) for 12 months, the United Kingdom is conscious that Darfur is entering a critical period in which its people need the support of both the United Nations and the African Union more than ever.

Ambassador Lyall Grant highlighted what he considered to be some of the Security Council’s successes in the preceding months, including on such issues as the Islamic Republic of Iran, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea and women, peace and security.
