The assessment of the costs and needs necessary to achieve the MDGs carried out in developing countries at the recommendation of the 2005 World Summit led those countries to adopt very ambitiousdevelopment plans that were not financially sustainable without appropriate international assistance.

Many stressed the need for political will to be ambitious and actionable in launching a framework that, a decade from now, could honestly be assessed as having contributed in a meaningful way to achieving sustainable patterns of consumption and production in all countries.
