During this interesting and helpful meeting, the members of the General Committee unanimously encouraged me to establish a working group to formulate recommendations for the improvement of a number of aspects of the Conference’s organization.

Let me conclude by saying that being a facilitator of this process was sometimes very difficult but also very personally rewarding, especially when we managed to bridge the gaps between delegations and to create common and cross-regional ground on such an important issue.

While in a number of countries, the positive impacts of globalization have been reaped in the form of rapid economic growth, globalization has also given rise to a range of challenging issues including rapid transmission of financial shocks, international crime and drug trafficking, increasingly volatile and turbulent international financial and product markets, issues of food and energy security, climate change, migration and a widening of income and social inequalities.

A few have been involved in such audits to date: the Swiss Federal Audit Office (Swiss public entities use IPSAS as their accounting standards); the National Audit Office (NAO) of United Kingdom (IPSAS are used in the United Kingdom government accounts and NAO audited the IPSAS-based accounts of WFP); the French Cour des Comptes also benefits from its fresh experience of certifying the French Government’s accounts guided by an IPSAS-type approach.
