The international community’s response to this appalling human rights crisis should serve as a wake-up call as we also deliberate the future of the Council and its membership.

The investments we make to strengthen the ability of peacekeepers to detect breakdowns in a peace process, to sound the alarm bells in times of crisis and to quickly redeploy forces to dangerous hotspots are indeed investments in conflict prevention.

What is clear from these very well attended global meetings is that for developing countries such as Grenada, the alarm has been sounded — the alarm that climate change is bearing down on our countries and undermining our potential for both economic recovery in the short term and economic growth in the longer term.

As noted by the co-facilitators in their report on the 2010 review of the United Nations peacebuilding architecture (A/64/868, annex), the review should be a wake-up call to strengthen the collective resolve to deal with peacebuilding in a more comprehensive and determined way.

That woke us up to the importance of defending the dignity and sovereignty of our peoples.
