Olga’s story: Violence against women and children in Guatemala continues to devastate lives

Enough has been said; Gaza’s terrorized and bombarded population deserves more from the world than words, pleas, and hopes that so far have not stopped a single Israeli bomb from shattering the lives of yet another Palestinian family, and the innocence and the mental health of yet another Palestinian child.

However, FGM is very widespread in Somalia and almost all Somali women and girls are subjected to this damaging practice.

Throughout much of the 60-year history of the conflicts, the border areas that felt the greatest impact of war were remote from the economic centres of the country.

Morocco welcomes the ongoing interest that the Security Council is attaching to Somalia in order to assist a country that has been ravaged by a bloody war for 20 years and to bring its people out of violence and instability.

Reconstitute forests ravaged by fires, storms, deforestation and ageing

As the President of Estonia said in his statement to the General Assembly in the general debate at its sixty-sixth session, “The rule of law and respect for international law are what will help ravaged and victimized societies to regain their dignity and rebuild their communities” ( see A/66/PV.11, page 48).

The dreadful catastrophe that recently struck my country gives me yet another opportunity to express to the international community the deep gratitude of the Haitian people and Government for its formidable display of solidarity and compassion towards our people, who have been mercilessly punished by the fury of the seismic event of 12 January.

Efforts to provide assistance to victims must seek to recognize and validate the traumatising experience of torture they have suffered, prevent further isolation by reintegrating them into society, and address the fundamental aim of torture which is, often, to isolate and engender fear in victims in order to break their will.

I should like to conclude by saying that, in our work, we should focus more on preventive diplomacy and lessons learned in order to prevent conflicts, rather than dealing with post-conflict situations, which are always more costly in terms of human life and physical and economic destruction.

We hope that the United Nations can deliver a coordinated, cohesive and efficient response in support of a people that has suffered from decades of armed violence and poverty.

The launching of the implementation of such a protocol will be a test of the good will of the parties to the conflict to find satisfactory solutions to crucial problems facing the people of Darfur, who have been battered by the war.

We urge President Al-Assad to respect his commitments to the Joint Special Envoy, withdraw Syrian forces from populated areas, end the bloodshed and honour his agreement to allow the United Nations observers freedom of movement throughout the country, including in the war-torn city of Homs.
