The pursuit by the Department of high-quality translation and interpretation services is based on a three-pronged approach: (a) reliance on exacting standards in recruiting language staff only through periodic competitive language examinations in the relevant language professions; (b) provision of training and close and continuing supervision of junior language staff throughout their initial probationary period and beyond, as well as expanded opportunities for upgrading substantive and technical skills for longer-serving staff; and (c) an outreach programme aimed at helping equip graduates of partner language training institutions with the skill sets required by language services, with a view to expanding the pool of potential recruits.

The Conference urged FAO to develop and disseminate practical, user-friendly tools and methodologies for such data collection and analyses.

In addition to its policy, advocacy and system-wide coordination work, the operational support of the Special Unit to Member States and the United Nations system has been provided mainly through its three-in-one multilateral South-South support architecture: the Global South-South Development Academy, which helps partners to systematically and jointly identify, document and share southern development solutions; the annual Global South-South Development Expo, which has enabled partners to regularly showcase successful and scalable development solutions; and the South-South Global Assets and Technology Exchange (SS-GATE), which has provided partners, especially private sector partners, with the opportunity to list solutions, match supply and demand and collaborate for scaling up, including through finding financing options.

The specific objectives of the Meeting were: (a) to examine the trends that are apparent in the worldwide development of GNSS and how they will affect the growing population of users of satellite-positioning technologies; (b) to review ongoing and planned initiatives as well as case studies that could contribute to the wider use of GNSS technology and its applications, including the possibility of one or more national, regional and international pilot projects in which interested institutions could incorporate the use of GNSS technology; (c) identify a functional partnership that could be established to promote innovative GNSS-enabled applications, as well as recommend how such a partnership could be established through voluntary actions that could include Governments, international organizations, research and development institutions, academia and other relevant stakeholders; and (d) define recommendations and findings to be forwarded for consideration by ICG and its working groups.
