Although we have played as children, we now see the world through our adult filters and impose adult meanings, seeking to explain the irrational in rational terms.

Building on the Education for All (EFA) concept defined at the Jomtien Conference in 1990, the Dakar World Education Forum in 2000 set six main goals: develop early childhood care and education; provide all children with free, compulsory primary education; promote learning of young people and adults and provide them with necessary life skills; increase adult literacy by 50%; achieve gender parity by 2005 and gender equality by 2015; and improve the quality of education.

This term has evolved and is now widely used to describe ongoing processes, which include information-sharing and dialogue between children and adults based on mutual respect, and in which children can learn how their views and those of adults are taken into account and shape the outcome of such processes.
