The representative from Colombia, speaking on behalf of the Group of Latin American and Caribbean States (GRULAC), expressed the condolences of the group over the passing of Mr. Nettleford and welcomed the two new members of the Working Group.

The delegation stated that the phenomena of neo-Nazism did not exist in Estonia, and that the events in which people pay their respect to those who died in the war should not be seen as acts of neo-Nazism.

A few participants, however pointed to a danger that the term “quality education” tended to become too broad complicating any assessment of outcomes or measurement of results, and that an agreed-to definition was warranted.

The Chairman, on behalf of the Commission, requested the President to convey the condolences of the Commission to the family of Ms. Dmitrieva.

It was also suggested that FAO should undertake technical work in the following five priority areas to assist States and RFMOs implement resolutions 61/105 and 64/72 and the FAO Guidelines: (i) improving and expanding application of the criteria for the identification of VMEs beyond corals, sponges, seamounts and hydrothermal vents; (ii) developing guidance on impact mitigation measures and best practices for developing and applying encounter protocols relevant to VMEs, particularly by RFMOs; (iii) developing guidance on what and how information should be collected to implement measures for managing fishery impacts on VMEs; (iv) defining certain terms that could clarify implementation of the FAO Guidelines; and (v) developing guidance on best practices for conducting assessments.

Allow me also to join previous speakers in conveying our most sincere sympathy, condolences and solidarity to the Government and the people of Haiti, especially the families who suffered most.

After discussion, the Working Group agreed that the questions for further consideration on that matter would include (A/CN.9/717, para. 143): (i) whether a provision on protection of the integrity of the arbitral process should be in the form of a general formulation or should contain specific instances that were meant to be specifically addressed; (ii) the interplay between the protection of the integrity of the arbitral process and the provisions in the UNCITRAL Arbitration Rules already dealing with that issue; and (iii) how to determine the threshold for a limitation to transparency based on the ground of the need to protect integrity of the arbitral process.

The Group deeply admired United Nations peacekeepers for their commitment to that noble cause and paid special tribute to those who had laid down their lives in the line of duty.

As for why a commemorative activity initiated by students would become a movement for democracy to combat corruption and eventually cause a fatal incident, I believe we should analyse it in an objective manner and pass a fair judgment accordingly.

The UNV Executive Coordinator paid tribute to the deaths of the UNVs, and introduced the report (DP/2010/28).

The members of the Council also expressed their deep sympathy and condolences to the victims of that heinous crime and to their families, the people and Government of Nigeria and the Secretary-General and other United Nations staff members.

Before I conclude, I would like to offer my condolences on the recent attacks in Mogadishu and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and to also salute the memories of three Indian peacekeepers who died in hand-to-hand combat under the United Nations flag, two weeks ago, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

In Beijing, the Embassy community, led by Chargé d’ Affairs Robert Goldberg, gathered outside by the flagpole of the ceremonial gate to participate in a memorial ceremony that included a moment of silence for the earthquake victims, a presentation of a wreath, and the lowering of the flag by U.S. Marines.

[...] [...] National Day of Mourning declared by the Chinese State Council, the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and its consulates on mainland China lowered U.S. flags to half mast and held brief ceremonies of remembrance.

Following the briefing, on 13 January the members of the Council issued a statement to the press, in which the Council expressed its condolences to the Government and people of Guinea-Bissau; encouraged the authorities, political parties and people of Guinea-Bissau to respect the legal and institutional framework for the transition phase, and ensure the conditions for peaceful, timely, free, fair and transparent presidential elections were met.

The Subcommittee expressed its condolences to and solidarity with the Governments of Japan, Myanmar, New Zealand, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and the Sudan with regard to the recent natural disasters that had taken so many lives and caused so much damage in those countries.
