By its decision 16/COP.9, the COP decided that the specific thematic topic to be considered by the UNCCD 2nd Scientific Conference, which will be held during CST S-3 in 2012, would be “Economic assessment of desertification, sustainable land management and resilience of arid, semi-arid and dry sub-humid areas”.

It is particularly encouraged that the IATF and other collaborative agencies will consider publicizing the UNDDD when their planned activities are relevant to it.

Further, the RCUs would ensure that relevant information on activities under the UNCCD at the regional, subregional and national levels, such as outcomes of sessions of the COP and subsidiary bodies, is distributed to the concerned country Parties, including academics, institutions and networks, and reflected in their work through science and technology correspondents.

Noting that the ten-year strategic plan and framework highlights the importance given to the development and implementation of scientifically based and sound methods for monitoring and assessing desertification and the efforts under way to promote scientific research and to strengthen the scientific basis of the activities on desertification and drought under the Convention

The need to complement existing knowledge management systems and similar initiatives already available at the local, national, subregional, regional and global levels when developing the UNCCD knowledge management system was highlighted, so as to ensure that the system is comprehensive, avoids duplication, reduces costs and benefits from past experience.

Parties called for improved predictability, consistency and transparency in the mobilization, allocation and use of voluntary contributions and core resources for the activities of the UNCCD bodies, the GM and the secretariat.

Subprogramme 2 involves the support of the secretariat to the alignment and development of national, subregional and regional action programmes (NAPs, SRAPs and RAPs), cooperation with relevant international organisations, promotion of synergies among the three Rio Conventions, and analytical work and advocacy concerning interlinkages between DLDD and water, food security, poverty alleviation, gender, forests and migration.

A project with the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification in Those Countries Experiencing Serious Drought and/or Desertification, Particularly in Africa, developed the livelihood and conservation skills of 200 youth volunteers in two regions of Ethiopia, demonstrating a sustainable approach to fighting poverty and desertification.

Priority will be given to particularly vulnerable developing countries, especially low-lying coastal, arid and semi-arid areas, LDC’s, SIDS and Africa, land-locked countries, and developing country parties with areas prone to floods, drought and desertification, with fragile ecosystems, and facing increased frequency of extreme and catastrophic events and trends linked to climate change.
