Analysing, as they did, the dynamics of the construction of nation states, the sources of democracies and social movements in the two regions, as well as the revolution in Haiti, they provided a welcome opportunity for sharing the views on the forces that favoured these processes.

The two joint symposiums convened at the end of August and October entailing interaction between Governments and civil society offered a space for Switzerland and international civil society and Governments to brainstorm with Governments, academics, international organizations and each other with respect to Forum issues, namely, the outcomes of the 2010 Forum in Mexico, the connections between those outcomes and the thematic programme for the 2011 Forum, the role of civil society in the Forum, and how to build on the efforts of 2010 so as to strengthen interaction between civil society and Governments in the 2011 Forum.

The delegation of Thailand also noted that the discussions and recommendations for action from the Asia-Pacific Urban Forum were very useful and should be implemented to promote sustainable urban development in the region, and particularly requested the secretariat to prioritize three areas of work: firstly, to develop criteria and standards for city classification, such as “sustainable city”, “eco-city”, and “green industrial city” to provide a guideline for benchmarking sustainable urban development at the regional and subregional levels; secondly, to develop databases and networks at the regional and subregional levels that would include urban and rural population statistics and economic, social and physical data, including environment and geo-climatic data; and thirdly, to hold a symposium on urban climate change among member States in order to exchange experiences and best practices towards achieving sustainable city development.

During the symposium, Rosli Mohd Ali, Chairman of the Interventional Cardiovascular Society of Malaysia, explained the country's AMI registry and the current treatment situation.

The symposium, attended by over 45 Member States, was divided into three parts: (i) the 1954 Hague Convention – the legal framework for the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict; (ii) the development of the legal protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict; and (iii) the protection of cultural property in the event of armed conflict: institutional questions.

ZWD has concentrated on prevention of HIV/AIDS through awareness-raising programmes: (a) symposiums on the occasion of World AIDS Day as an opportunity for people at different levels to unite in the fight against HIV/AIDS; (b) a training course on means of AIDS prevention was conducted in Elgadaref State; (c) publication and distribution of materials about HIV/AIDS and means of prevention in schools of Gadarif and Khartoum States and displaced camps; (d) a workshop in partnership with other local NGOs to raise the awareness of the sweepers at the hospitals of Gadarif City as a protection measure against HIV/AIDS and hepatitis and to correct the way the hospital collected rubbish; (e) educational classes on prevention of HIV/AIDS in villages and localities of Gadarif State and training of medical personnel.

The Public Symposium also dealt with trade and financial reforms to support development, innovative financing mechanisms, the trade agenda, and the possible role of LDCs in global economic governance.

The symposium highlighted the importance of the Vienna Declaration on Crime and Justice: Meeting the Challenges of the Twenty-first Century (General Assembly resolution 55/59, annex) and the action against terrorism recommended in the plans of action for the implementation of the Vienna Declaration on Crime and Justice: Meeting the Challenges of the Twenty-first Century (General Assembly resolution 56/261, annex, paras. 22-24), which has been at the forefront of the UNODC assistance programme for countering terrorism.

In addition, question-and-answer sessions for interested delegations may be arranged in the weeks leading up to the high-level meetings and the general debate.

The Commission was informed of the outcomes of other preparatory events for the Rio+20 Conference, such as the Delhi Ministerial Dialogue on Green Economy and Inclusive Growth, held in New Delhi in October 2011, and the HighLevel Symposium on the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development, held in Beijing in September 2011.

Under the technical assistance programme, efforts will be made to develop a safety manual for CTC alternatives and hold a symposium on CTC alternatives for the solvent sector.

(c) Participating at the National Symposium on Trade Law hosted by the Liberian Commercial Law Reform Program National Steering Committee with the goal of providing support to the Liberian Government in its ongoing efforts regarding the Commercial Law Reform Program.

The two aforementioned conferences arrived at the decision to deploy leapfrog development strategically in the two regions, and were thus a major move by the Chinese Government to provide vigorous support for comprehensive development of all types in minority-nationality areas, as well as lessen the disparity in development between the eastern and western regions, which will have an important influence on the long-term future development of the regions concerned.

In partnership with indigenous peoples, other United Nations agencies, States, research institutions and non-governmental organizations, the Permanent Forum should organize, sponsor or support international and regional seminars, workshops, symposia and consultations on the different aspects of shifting cultivation related to the socio-cultural identity and integrity of indigenous peoples.

The Korean Society of Interventional Cardiology (KSIC, www.ksic.org) and the Korean Society of Cardiology (KSC) presented a roadmap to improve treatment results and establish an Asian treatment standard for AMI during a symposium titled 'Raising Asia Standard,' held yesterday in the Grand Hyatt Seoul, Korea.

Session II.1 was devoted to working group discussions (“knowledge café”) on the question of how to translate commitments into action and how to mobilize parliamentary support for the Istanbul Programme of Action.

Evidence was seen in the following field trips to Wuwei, Jinchang and Minqin through meeting the Shiyang River Management Bureau, visiting the water user associations and talking to relevant staff from water departments.

The Year of Quality will involve a series of activities like the quality seminar among ordinary employees, the QCC team's proposal improvement and result release, the initiation of improvement project for significant quality problems, the quality knowledge contest, and the appraisal and selection of quality pacesetter. All these activities are intended to set quality improvement as a dominant theme in 2013, involve all the ordinary employees in quality improvement efforts, develop the deep-rooted quality awareness with every employee, increase quality management level effectively and raise the company's quality brand image and core competitiveness.

(b) A session during the Global Business of Biodiversity Symposium on BioTrade’s interaction with the cosmetics and fashion industries, with the target audience being international business representatives, non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and governments (July).

Another possibility that should be envisaged is the organization of judicial colloquiums with the participation of international and regional human rights mechanisms, judges at national courts, NHRIs and NGOs, with a view to deepening judges’ understanding of human rights mechanisms and encouraging them to incorporate international human rights standards in their decisions.
