These include: a deep-sea port being constructed on the Indian Ocean near the Rakhine State capital of Sittwe, and parallel road, high-speed rail, and oil and natural gas pipelines that will create an energy and trade corridor to China’s landlocked south west; the Kaladan multi-modal project that will create a transportation corridor between the Indian Ocean and India’s eastern seaboard and its landlocked north east; and the Dawei Development Project which, if completed according to plan, would include a large industrial estate and modern deep-sea port in the south, with road and rail links for transhipment of goods to Thailand and on to Vietnam, cutting several days off the sea route through the Straits of Malacca.

With regard to the sciences, the Government has identified mainstreaming of gender in STI as a serious concern and it is likely that UNESCO may be called upon to assist in the development of a gender policy for the science and technology sector.

The Advisory Committee notes that the requirements for the United Nations Office at Vienna are to be shared among the four organizations based in Vienna, namely, the United Nations Office at Vienna, the International Atomic Energy Agency, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization.

There are many other issues that the authorities cannot avoid dealing with, including: ensuring the exchange rate remains stable, but also not overvalued, so as to protect and promote manufacturing and agricultural produc tion; tackling corruption; protecting against the possibility of rising inflation; dealing with rampant land speculation and the potential for land grabbing; and ensuring that new land legislation does not lead to dispossession of small landholders and those holding traditional title.

The delegation of Thailand also noted that the discussions and recommendations for action from the Asia-Pacific Urban Forum were very useful and should be implemented to promote sustainable urban development in the region, and particularly requested the secretariat to prioritize three areas of work: firstly, to develop criteria and standards for city classification, such as “sustainable city”, “eco-city”, and “green industrial city” to provide a guideline for benchmarking sustainable urban development at the regional and subregional levels; secondly, to develop databases and networks at the regional and subregional levels that would include urban and rural population statistics and economic, social and physical data, including environment and geo-climatic data; and thirdly, to hold a symposium on urban climate change among member States in order to exchange experiences and best practices towards achieving sustainable city development.

In that context, that delegation was of the view that the Committee should explore ways to cooperate in the future with other United Nations bodies, such as the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Commission on Science and Technology for Development of the Economic and Social Council, in order to find ways in which space technology could contribute to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals and any future development targets that might result from political commitments undertaken by Member States upon the conclusion of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20).

According to a recent assessment conducted by UNEP and the Centre for Technology and Industrial Information Management (see document by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC), “Sustainable consumption and production, mining, transport, chemicals and waste management: the results, trends and challenges of sustainable development in Latin America and the Caribbean”), 14 out of the 20 countries surveyed in the region have instituted mechanisms (policies, programmes, projects or plans) to accelerate change towards sustainable consumption and production.

No amount of talk about the “economic unity of the world” can hide the fact that some countries with little export trade in industrial goods and few, if any, inventions for sale have nothing to gain from granting patents on inventions worked and patented abroad except the avoidance of unpleasant foreign retaliation in other directions.

Agriculture is the major user of freshwater, accounting for almost 70 per cent of water withdrawal globally.18 However, a growing problem is the increasing competition for freshwater between agriculture, urban and industrial uses (see figure X), causing tension between rural and urban areas and possibly threatening regional or national food security, a situation which is exacerbated by climate change (see box 6).

The introduction of ICT, and the generation of digitized IP data at each IP (industrial property) Office, creates the possibility of greatly enhancing the interaction between such Offices throughout the world and between those Offices and WIPO, and of providing more online services to stakeholders.

The objectives of the project are: to contribute to enhancing the development of the cotton industry in C4 countries; to transfer Brazilian technology to increase the profitability of the cotton supply chain and to improve the quality of life and food security and nutrition levels in beneficiary countries.

Industrialized countries must commit to deep, drastic, and unconditional cuts in carbon and greenhouse gas emissions through domestic measures, to be expressed in international, legally binding agreements within the Climate Convention that contain targets based on science and equity.
