Hydrothermal vents sustaining benthic and benthopelagic communities driven by chemosynthetic processes were first discovered in the late 1970s.9 At mid-ocean ridges, interaction among the liquid magma from the Earth’s mantel, gases and water at extreme pressures create high-temperature deep-sea vents rich in chemicals that feed bacteria at the base of unique food chains.
