The institute will also seek to cooperate actively with other UNESCO centres and offices already established to improve conservation in the Asia and the Pacific region, including the UNESCO Bangkok Office (which has played a pivotal role in advancing heritage conservation and management awareness and capacity in the region, and its network of cooperating training and education institutions in the Asia and the Pacific region – the Asian Academy for Heritage Management (AAHM), founded together with ICCROM), the ACCU Nara centre in Japan, SEAMEO-SPAFA in Thailand, CEC-IUCN and UNITAR-HOAP in Japan, as well as institutions with UNESCO Chairs established for conservation purposes.

This situation prompted Her Highness Sheikha Mozah Bint Nasser Al-Missned, Consort of His Highness the Emir of Qatar, in her capacity as UNESCO Special Envoy for Basic and Higher Education, to address a letter to the Secretary-General on 5 January, calling upon the Security Council and the international community to ensure the necessary protection for educational institutions in Gaza with a view to providing a safe haven for the children of Gaza and their families, allowing access to humanitarian assistance and basic materials and evacuating the sick and the wounded.

Equally worrying is that states like India and South Korea feel pressured to adopt similar methods to secure the energy they need, especially as states like Angola and Nigeria have indicated that they will prefer not the bidder who pays market price, but the one who offers the most attractive side benefits.

Economic, social and cultural rights and fundamental freedoms introduced or strengthened under the new Constitution include, inter alia: the right to adequate, nutritious food and clean water; the right to adequate housing; the right to a good standard of health; adequate access to sewerage and electricity; the right to marriage and family; the right to education; the right to work; the right to strike; the right to enjoy a pension; the right to take part in cultural life; and the right to enjoy property.

Several delegations commended the secretariat for documenting and sharing good practices and country experiences in eco-city development, promotion of public transportation, green buildings, 3R (reduce, reuse, recycle) strategies, sustainable urban planning, solid waste management, water supply, sewerage, participatory approaches to urban management, promotion of public-private partnerships and municipal finance.
