In the past, trade concessions have been withheld and trade sanctions implemented against certain developing countries whose IP regimes have not met the expectations of their trading partners in the developed world.18 More recently, there has been a trend for developed countries to seek commitments on IP standards from an increasing number of developing countries in bilateral or regional trade and investment agreements that go beyond TRIPS.19 Table 8.1 below, provides some examples.20 We accept that to a degree, developed countries have a legitimate interest in the IP standards of their trading partners.
