My delegation expresses its deep concern at the aggressive policies with which Israel is challenging the international community, at its rejection of all relevant Security Council resolutions, including resolutions 242 (1967) and 338 (1973), at its disregard of all appeals and calls by the countries of the world, and at its negative response to international initiatives, including the Arab Peace Initiative submitted by King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, King of sisterly Saudi Arabia — the initiative that provided a political framework for peace in the region.

On 8 November, despite the previous démarches by my Personal Envoy for Western Sahara, Christopher Ross, and my Special Representative for Western Sahara, Hany Abdel-Aziz, towards their Moroccan interlocutors in an attempt to discourage any forceful action against the protesters, Morocco launched a security operation at Gdim Izik.

Despite an ongoing and acute threat to its security, Israel has gone to great lengths fostering conditions for Palestinian economic development and cooperation, including liberalization of the system by which civilian goods enter Gaza, as well as engaging in political dialogue with the Palestinian Authority and assisting in extending humanitarian assistance to Palestinian beneficiaries.

The Organization received both the President of the Islamic Republic of Iran, Mr Mohammad Khatami, and the President of the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, Mr Abdelaziz Bouteflika, for a conference on the Dialogue Among Civilizations.

The observer for the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water (PSIPW) also made a statement under the item.

The position of Lebanon on the aims, value and methodology of dialogue, as well as on the conditions that make it credible and effective, have been clearly stated on many occasions, notably during the General Assembly’s 2007 High-level Dialogue on Interreligious and Intercultural Understanding and Cooperation for Peace and in the address of the His Excellency the President of the Lebanese Republic in 2008 in support of the dialogue initiative of King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud of Saudi Arabia.

The research allowed performing laboratory assays for genetic variants of susceptibility factors for thrombosis among Palestinians thus enhancing Palestinian capacity in molecular biology, while at the same time building professional trust and intellectual cooperation between Israeli and Palestinian researchers.

The attendees expressed their appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz, for the statement delivered on his behalf that commenced the proceedings of the meeting.

The session was also attended by observers for the following non-governmental organizations with permanent observer status with the Committee: EURISY, the European Space Policy Institute, the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), the International Association for the Advancement of Space Safety, the International Astronautical Federation (IAF), the International Astronomical Union, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, the International Institute of Space Law, the International Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing, the Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz International Prize for Water, the Secure World Foundation, the Space Generation Advisory Council (SGAC) and the World Space Week Association.

The Committee elected the 10 members of the Bureau, including the two co-chairs, Park In-kook, Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea, and John Ashe, Permanent Representative of Antigua and Barbuda, the rapporteur of the session, Tania Valerie Raguž of Croatia, and Maged A. Abdelaziz of Egypt, Ana Bianchi of Argentina, Jiří Hlaváček of the Czech Republic, Asad Majeed Khan of Pakistan, John M. Matuszak of the United States, Charles T. Ntwaagae of Botswana and Paolo Soprano of Italy as members of the Bureau.

Allow me to join my colleagues in extending my condolences to the Government and people of Turkey on the victims of yesterday’s earthquake, and to the Government and people of Saudi Arabia on the passing away of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Sultan Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud.

At successive sessions, the Council of the League adopted resolutions concerning international terrorism and means of countering it that included the continuation of efforts to support Arab moves within the United Nations to promote the adoption by the General Assembly of a resolution on the formation of a working group to study means of implementing the recommendations contained in the Riyadh Declaration, which was issued by the Counter-Terrorism International Conference, held in Riyadh in February 2005, and the proposal put forward by the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah Bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, concerning the establishment of an international counter-terrorism centre that would strengthen international cooperation in that important sphere.
