Much of the forest policy dialogue in those forums has been dominated either by a discussion of the need for an international, legally (or non-legally) binding instrument or by preparations to discuss the need for such an instrument, to the detriment of precise and committed government action to actually halt the crisis affecting the world’s forests and their peoples.

Thirdly, UNAMA’s renewed mandate was informed by important developments over the past year, namely, the beginning of transition; important progress on regional cooperation at the Istanbul Conference; the strategic decision at the Bonn Conference to enter into firm, mutual commitments and to chart out an internationally supported decade of transformation; increased momentum towards a political process and the decision of the Council to split the sanctions regime established pursuant to resolution 1267 (1999).

We must take a firm stand against those who would hinder the achievement of peace in Somalia, including those destructive individuals who would fish in troubled waters and act to return the country to the years of loss and fighting.

The Group encourages the Security Council, through the Sanctions Committee, to take a firmer stance against Ivorian parties that breach the embargo or consistently refuse to allow inspections of weapons and ammunition in accordance with the terms of paragraph 5 of resolution 1893 (2009).

Regarding the item entitled “Recommendations for achieving the goal of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons”, the Group reiterates its firm position in favour of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation in all their aspects, as well as its concern about the serious threat to humanity posed by the very existence of nuclear weapons and the slow progress towards their total elimination, which is the only absolute guarantee against the threat or use of such weapons.
