In the course of these visits, the Director-General attended the opening of the Conferences of the Ministers of Education of the countries of West Africa (ECOWAS) in Ghana, of Central Africa (CEMAC) in Cameroon, and of the Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa (PALOP) in Sao Tome and Principe, as well as the official launch of the International Year to Commemorate the Struggle against Slavery and its Abolition, in Ghana and Mauritius.

In 2001, the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) /World Health Organization (WHO) Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) established a provisional tolerable monthly intake (PTMI) of 70 picograms (pg)/kg of body weight (bw) / month for PCDDs, PCDFs and dioxin-like PCBs expressed as toxic equivalent (TEQ).

Due to their persistency and toxicity, PCDDs, PCDFs and PCBs have been listed as POPs under the Stockholm Convention, which requires the signed Parties to take measures to eliminate or reduce the release of POPs into the environment.

This Agreement represents the understanding of the Government of Sao Tome and Principe (the “Country”) and the Executive Committee with respect to the complete phase-out of controlled use of the ozone-depleting substances set out in Appendix 1-A (the “Substances”) prior to 1 January 2010 in compliance with Protocol schedules.

The Executive Board will also have before it for discussion 20 draft country programme documents for Ethiopia, Gabon, Ghana, Mauritania, Sao Tome and Principe, Senegal and Zimbabwe in the Africa region; Morocco, Syrian Arab Republic and Yemen in the Arab States region; Bangladesh, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Mongolia and the Philippines in the Asia and the Pacific region; Albania (draft common country programme document), Kyrgyzstan and Ukraine in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia regions; and El Salvador, Englishand Dutch-speaking Caribbean countries, and Honduras in the Latin America and Caribbean region.

At its seventeenth session, the Human Rights Council will consider and adopt the final outcome of the review of the following countries: Nauru, Rwanda, Nepal, Saint Lucia, Oman, Austria, Myanmar, Australia, Georgia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Sao Tomé and Principe, Namibia, the Niger, Mozambique, Estonia and Paraguay.

In African SIDS, capacities were reinforced including through training of trainers and curriculum review in environmental education for sustainable development in Sao Tome and Principe, and freshwater management training in the light of climate change in Comoros and Madagascar.

The Committee followed closely the statements of Angola, Cameroon, the Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Sao Tome and Principe and the secretariat of ECCAS concerning the continued acts of maritime piracy, which represented a challenge to the security and economy of Central Africa.

The delegation indicated that the Constitution of Sao Tome and Principe recognized civil and political rights – such as the right to life and the right to liberty –, economic, social and cultural rights, and collective rights, such as the right of peoples to self-determination.

A recent study evaluating more than 2000 PCDD/PCDF cement kiln measurements and indicating that most modern cement kilns co-processing waste (also organic hazardous wastes) can meet an emission level of 0.1 ng PCDD/PCDF I-TEQ/m3 .
