Zambia: Afterdiscussing whether to wait forthe national [...][...]

A number of specific comments were made as follows: the concept of food safety is universal, thus thereshould be no exception, as presently in Article 4.2, allowing exporting countries to export food, which does not comply with its national legislation; the issue of implementation of the Code, especially by countries lacking a control system, should be clarified; the present text may contradict some of the principles of Codex insofar as they establish and draw upon national regulatory frameworks; the ethics of equal treatment in terms of commercial transactions and food aid and donations should be made clearer; and some of the provisions in the text may be contrary to WTO provisions.

Several other Member States, while appreciating efforts to focus on cluster needs, questioned the results of strategic formulations undertaken in the recent past, many of which did not, in their opinion, reflect the full range of Member States’ needs or existing regional and subregional coordination mechanisms.

However, now that the relevance of the mainstream news media is being challenged by the rising popularity of alternative sources, news distribution platforms are rapidly multiplying and diversifying and social media tools are revolutionizing the way in which people access and share information, the Committee wonders whether the time has come for the Department of Public Information to assess how it canenhance the responsiveness of its public information activities to the Organization’s needs, how it can bring greater creativity and innovation to its work, and how it can continue to promote the work of the United Nations in a way that is more relevant to the daily lives of individuals all around the world.
