Because of the increasing issues related to the management of radioisotopes (supply, transport, disposal, impossibility to turn radiation off ), it is expected that gamma sterilization will gradually be replaced by E-beam and X-ray.

It also plays a role in assuring the quality of stable and radioisotope analyses through its coordination of intercomparison tests with laboratories around the world.

The available technological solution for the disposal of intermediate-level waste with long-lived isotopes and high-level waste is long-term containment in deep subsurface storage facilities considered geologically stable and “watertight”, making sure that the migration time of the radioactive particles from their original site to the biosphere will be long enough for the radioactivity to have decayed to far below acceptable limits or that the particles will stay fully confined in their deposit location.

Converting these facilities to civilian use and opening them to safeguards inspections may reveal various kinds of information: including production capacity and history, the isotopics of fissile material, the genealogy of technologies, and problems of safety and security.

Argentina had successfully reduced the use of highly enriched uranium in its nuclear research reactors, thus becoming the first country to rely entirely on low-enriched uranium for its total production of radioisotopes.

We also encourage States to promote the use of low enriched uranium fuels and targets in commercial applications such as isotope production, and in this regard, welcome relevant international cooperation on high-density low enriched uranium fuel to support the conversion of research and test reactors.
