Direct negotiations between companies and indigenous peoples may be the most efficient and desirable way of arriving at agreed-upon arrangements for the extraction of natural resources within or near indigenous territories that are fully respectful of indigenous peoples’ rights, and they may provide indigenous peoples with opportunities to pursue their own development priorities.

However, the view was expressed that, in considering possible solutions, the feasibility and efficiency of existing options should be examined, and priority given to practical measures that would avoid duplication of efforts and ensure an optimal use of the existing framework.

Following further consultations with stakeholders in Iraq, the representative of UNIDO said that in principle, Iraq did not object to using hydrocarbon as the replacing refrigerant, subject to ensuring that: the technology was technically feasible in terms of the availability of components and raw materials for such products; the final product price was comparable to HFC-134a products; safety considerations were fulfilled within the project, covering both manufacturing and servicing aspects; the performance of hydrocarbon-based products was similar to that of HFC-134a products, keeping in mind that the temperature in Baghdad could easily reach 50 degrees Celsius in the summertime; and information was provided on similar experience with projects funded by the Multilateral Fund for shifting commercial refrigeration to hydrocarbon technology.

Should family reintegration prove impossible within an appropriate period or be deemed contrary to the best interests of the child, stable and definitive solutions, such as adoption or kafala of Islamic law, should be envisaged; failing this, other long-term options should be considered, such as foster care or appropriate residential care, including group homes and other supervised living arrangements.

To identify effective and feasible interventions to prevent child injuries, the Centre for Injury Prevention and Research and its partners — UNICEF Bangladesh and The Alliance for Safe Children — designed a comprehensive community-based child injury prevention model, Prevention of Child Injuries through Social Intervention and Education (PRECISE).

In that context, he suggested that promoting a dialogue between different groups, a bottomup approach, was a feasible shorter-term goal towards broader economic integration in the region, while establishing an agreement encompassing all of Asia and the Pacific could be a long-term goal.

Such an approach should include, inter alia, land-use planning, the planning of non-motorized and public transport options in both urban and rural areas, infrastructure for intermodal freight systems, business models aimed at financially viable operations and maintenance, communications and outreach messages designed to influence behavioural patterns, and clean technologies with a view to achieving energy efficiency and low emissions.

In this Section, possible variations of Trunk Road tunnel options are examined, with a view to determining practically feasible tunnel ideas that can be consolidated with harbour-front enhancement ideas for realising the objectives of this project.

Because of this difference, and also because of the wide variety of uses for solid-state equipment, all persons responsible for applying this equipment must satisfy themselves that each intended application of this equipment is acceptable.

While gender equality is increasingly recognized as a core issue in the maintenance of international peace and security, the role of women in peace processes generally continues to be viewed as a side issue rather than as fundamental to the development of viable democratic institutions and the establishment of sustainable peace.

As members are aware, there are three substantive items on the Commission’s agenda for this last year of the current cycle, namely, “Recommendations for achieving the objective of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons”; “Elements of a draft declaration of the 2010s as the fourth disarmament decade”; and “Practical confidence-building measures in the field of conventional weapons”.

In a supplementary document to her application for a building permit, she stated that the proposed location of the planned extension was the only possible location on the property, primarily for functional reasons.

To meet those challenges, the delegation of Egypt looks forward to actively participating in the deliberations of Working Group I on “Recommendations for achieving the objective of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation of nuclear weapons”, Working Group II on “Elements of a draft declaration of the 2010s as the fourth disarmament decade”, and Working Group III, which will discuss the topic “Practical confidence-building measures in the field of conventional weapons”.

Such restrictions reduce the likelihood that such licensing can be an effective bargaining tool for developing countries negotiating prices with patentees – it can be effective only if the compulsory licensing alternative is a viable economic proposition.
