In its report A/65/518, the Advisory Committee emphasized the importance it attached to the central leadership role of the Office of Central Support Services in ensuring an Organization-wide perspective on the needs and priorities relating to construction, major maintenance and the overall management of United Nations facilities.

The Subcommittee recalled that the General Assembly, in its resolution 66/71, had emphasized that regional and interregional cooperation in the field of space activities was essential to strengthen the peaceful uses of outer space, assist States in the development of their space capabilities and contribute to the achievement of the goals of the United Nations Millennium Declaration and, to that end, had requested relevant regional organizations to offer the assistance necessary so that countries could carry out recommendations of regional conferences; and that the Assembly had recognized, in that regard, the important role played by conferences and other mechanisms in strengthening regional and international cooperation among States, such as the African Leadership Conference on Space Science and Technology for Sustainable Development, the Asia-Pacific Regional Space Agency Forum (APRSAF), APSCO and the Space Conference of the Americas.

The Beijing Statement on Combating Desertification and Promoting Sustainable Development (see E/CN.17/2008/15, annex I) recognizes the importance of forests in both preventing desertification and land degradation as well as in rehabilitating degraded lands; it also states that the implementation of the forest instrument provides a framework for advancing sustainable forest management and its contribution to combating desertification, mitigating climate change and preserving forest biological diversity.

In the context of education, activities focus on the following areas: (a) violence against children as a follow-up to the recommendations contained in the World Report on the Violence against Children (2006), with an added emphasis on gender dimensions of such violence, the role of religion and culture in its prevention, and the promotion of non-violent, participatory practices and support services; (b) inclusive education, with the aim of promoting an educational system that answers the needs of a diverse group of pupils, paying particular attention to the excluded and marginalized; (c) governance and inequality, looking at how good governance in education can reduce disparities based on wealth, location, ethnicity, gender and other grounds; (d) textbook revision to promote peace-oriented approaches taking into account new education challenges related to quality.
