ESCAP has been assisting member States in tackling inefficiencies and bottlenecks in international trade by: (a) building-capacity among trade facilitation practitioners; (b) developing trade facilitation implementation methodologies and tools; (c) undertaking analytical and advocacy work; and (d) fostering a regional community of knowledge and best practices for trade facilitation thorough the United Nations Network of Experts for Paperless Trade in Asia and the Pacific (UN NExT).

The incumbent of the position would provide full-time dedicated support to DFS and DPKO during the development and implementation phases of Umoja; ensure departmental oversight and timely action on the development and implementation of enterprise resource planning in field operations and Headquarters offices; develop internal policies and strategies that will complement and integrate with the global strategy to ensure a smooth implementation of Umoja in DFS and DPKO offices as well as field operations; and represent DFS and DPKO in interdepartmental meetings, working groups and task forces related to the development and implementation of Umoja; and liaise with the Department of Management Umoja team, all DFS Divisions, relevant DPKO and DPA Offices and all field operations supported by DFS.

To balance the growing disparities between the prosperous coastal strip and the underdeveloped western and north-eastern regions, the Government tries to redirect domestic and foreign investments, in particular labour-intensive manufacturing to inland areas and relatively smaller cities, leaving higher-value-added activities like research, management, finance, insurance and design in the big cities.

The rail network is very dense in western and northern Poland, while the eastern part of the country is less well developed.

Recommendations proposed included prioritizing least developed countries in allocations of official development assistance; implementing new and innovative sources of financing; exploring and, where possible, experimenting with new types of financial and, especially, non-financial collaboration; leveraging resources through subsidies for international private sector engagement, especially foreign direct investment, in areas of least developed country priority; strengthening least developed country capacities for commercial contracting through greater transparency in agreements and by fostering governmental, especially parliamentary, review; increasing the participation of least developed countries in governance of the aid architecture.

In the context of basic education and with a view to attaining the MDGs and implementing PRSPs in the fight against extreme poverty, expanded access to basic education for girls should receive particular attention by UNESCO.

The Conference urged member countries, FAO, development partners, non-governmental organizations, civil society and the private sector to collaborate in integrating climate change adaptation and mitigation considerations into agriculture and development planning and implementation.

The Rio Group was committed to working with the United Nations on raising international standards, strengthening and consolidating existing international instruments and mechanisms, fulfilling the Millennium Development Goals related to children and the declaration and plan of action for “A World Fit for Children”.

No doubt these measures would lead to an observance, respect and enforcement of the fundamental right to development.

The report pointed out that the poor who live in the world’s drylands are being left behind in attaining the Millennium Development Goals, adding that the situation needs to be addressed on a priority basis by the international community and calling on the world’s leaders to recommit with a renewed political focus on these issues.

Unfortunately, such abuses were taking place in every part of the world, as demonstrated in Mr. Pinheiro’s report on violence against children.

The Observatory may decide to make a public statement if the competent authorities or the institutions visited fail to cooperate or follow up on the recommendations duly forwarded to them.

In addition, the Committee received one notification from a Member State pursuant to paragraph 15 of resolution 1737 (2006), as well as additional specific information on a prior general notification that had been submitted previously by another Member State pursuant to the same paragraph in connection with the receipt and unfreezing of funds, respectively, in order to make payments due under contracts entered into prior to the listing of two entities.

(c) To strive for greater acceptance, operationalization and realization of the right to development at the international level, while urging all States to undertake at the national level the necessary policy formulation and to institute the measures required for the implementation of the right to development as an integral part of fundamental human rights, and also urging all States to expand and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in ensuring development and eliminating obstacles to development in the context of promoting effective international cooperation for the realization of the right to development, bearing in mind that lasting progress towards the implementation of the right to development requires effective development policies at the national level and a favourable economic environment at the international level

Recognizing also the important and positive role of small and medium-sized enterprise clusters and organizations in the social and solidarity economy field, including cooperatives, as vehicles for promoting small-scale industry and for the implementation of the development goals in such fields as employment policy, social integration, regional and rural development, agriculture and environmental protection

At its resumed sixty-fourth session, the General Assembly reaffirmed the commitment by all States to establish a monitoring mechanism to follow up on all commitments related to the development of Africa, as contained in the political declaration on Africa’s development needs; reaffirmed its full support for the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development, and its commitment to the full implementation of the political declaration on Africa’s development needs; and requested the Secretary-General to submit a comprehensive report on the implementation of the resolution to the Assembly at its sixty-fifth session on the basis of inputs from Governments, organizations of the United Nations system and other stakeholders in the New Partnership (resolution 64/258).

Through targeted engagement with eight operations – Chad, Colombia, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Georgia, Kenya, Malaysia and the Syrian Arab Republic – the Office is actively tracking the implementation of recent changes at each stage of the operations management cycle, in order to identify opportunities for improvement.

We further reaffirm the need for the United Nations to play a fundamental role in the promotion of international cooperation for development and the coherence, coordination and implementation of development goals and actions agreed upon by the international community, and we resolve to strengthen coordination within the United Nations system in close cooperation with all other multilateral financial, trade and development institutions in order to support sustained economic growth, poverty eradication and sustainable development.

In addition, through funding provided by Canada, guidelines have been developed to increase awareness of how anti-personnel mines and other explosive remnants of war block development, strengthen coordination between mine action and development organisations, ensure mine action planning and implementation promotes development and poverty reduction efforts, ensure mine action is aligned with development plans, programmes and budgets, encourage development actors to assist mine-affected communities and integrate mine action in their development programming and assist bilateral and multilateral donors to integrate mine action in their development programming.
