Whilst it is recognized that the salary and benefits package of local universities' academics compare favourably with that of many, though by no means all, of their counterparts in universities and equivalent institutions elsewhere, the Administration considers that any direct comparison between the remuneration of academic staff in money terms could be misleading because the figures have to be interpreted in the context of each country's social and economic environment, the prevailing standard of living, inflation rate, purchasing power and market forces as well as relativities with other professions, which are essentially the factors determining the remuneration of academic staff.

It also participated in: (a) consultation tours and public meetings on the Commission on the Status of Women; (b) annual Hiroshima/Nagasaki commemoration programmes pertaining to the abolition of nuclear weapons; (c) national conferences on women and peace, disarmament, non-violence and sustainable clean energy; (d) various discussions and events on the implementation of Security Council resolution 1325 (2000); (e) campaigns such as “Make Poverty History”; (f) public lectures on the abolition of war, women and development, anti-trafficking and demilitarization; (g) a peacebuilding symposium in Rwanda; (h) presentations to examine the impact of war on youth and to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights; (i) workshops for Somali youth in support of gender equality education, as called for in the Agreed Conclusions of the Commission on the Status of Women; (j) a public forum against nuclear weapons.

As well as the resistance of the PPE material to the chemicals spilt, other factors to take into consideration when choosing appropriate PPE include the level of respiratory protection required, the durability of the PPE material and the effect that the PPE may have on heat stress and the responder’s ability to undertake specific work tasks.

It also called for measures to protect women, such as practical solutions to eradicate violence against women, a review of text-books in schools for the purpose of disseminating information on women’s rights, and increased public awareness on action against domestic violence.

As part of the anniversary ceremony at UNESCO Headquarters, an “Ocean Call” was presented, appealing for greater priority for coastal and ocean management programmes, ocean sciences and ocean technologies, as well as “A Message to the Peoples and Nations of the World on behalf of the Ocean”.

Cuba would not object to the adoption of the report, but wished to place on record their hope that Israel would understand the appeals from the international community and would endeavour to respect all human rights including of the Palestinian people living in the occupied Palestine territories, as is their obligation as the occupying power.

The colors of the skies and sunsets in the arid deserts of the Middle East and Africa, where I traveled when I was young, the humid airs of Asia, the heavy, low-hanging clouds of Scandinavia, those sweltering summer afternoon scenes of my childhood when all was quiet save for the chirping of the cicadas, and then the soaring skies of autumn – all the images of these many reminiscences have become layered, and have remained within me as blue memory.

Undertaking its central role as the most democratic and representative body of the United Nations, the General Assembly has convened today in response to appeals from all corners of the world for serious efforts to be made to bring an end to the senseless violence that has erupted and to stop the carnage and destruction being perpetrated by Israel, the occupying Power, against the defenceless Palestinian civilian population in the besieged Gaza Strip.

Responsiveness to enquiries will be improved through the provision of new call tracking and customer management tools, the redefinition of operational procedures and the establishment of quality standard policies.
