In so doing the Fund is working at the global level, including through collaboration with other United Nations agencies and the building of partnerships with Governments, civil society organizations (including indigenous people’s groups and faith-based networks) to promote women’s leadership and implement the Beijing Platform for Action and the Programme of Action of the International Conference on Population and Development.

The Commission, at its sixty-sixth session, adopted resolution 66/9 entitled “Full and effective implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action and its regional and global outcomes in the Asia-Pacific region”, which inter alia, endorsed the outcome of the High-level Intergovernmental Meeting, including the Bangkok Declaration, and called for a strengthening of the role of ESCAP in supporting members and associate members in this work.

At its sixty-sixth session, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to continue to report annually to the Assembly on the follow-up to and progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session, with an assessment of progress in gender mainstreaming, including information on key achievements, lessons learned and good practices, and recommendations on further measures to enhance implementation (resolution 66/132).

As a United Nations-sponsored conference of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and civil society, the focus would be on learning best practices, networking support and implementing the Beijing Platform for Action, Security Council resolution 1325 (2000) on women, peace and security, and the Millennium Development Goals.

We, the Representatives of the members and associate members of ESCAP, reaffirm our commitment to the full and effective implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly.

Regional perspectives in progress achieved and remaining gaps and challenges in the implementation of the Beijing Platform for Action

The Department of Pediatrics at BJU is starting to consolidate data on asthmatics in Beijing and has plans for its own Asthma Clinic to help with the long-term management of asthma.

At its sixty-fourth session, the General Assembly requested the Secretary-General to continue to report annually to it on the follow-up to and progress made in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session, with an assessment of progress in gender mainstreaming, including information on key achievements, lessons learned and good practices, and recommendations on further measures to enhance implementation, taking into account the discussions and outcome of the fifty-fourth session of the Commission in respect of the 15-year review of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the review of the outcome of the twentythird special session (resolution 64/141).

Welcoming progress made towards achieving gender equality, but stressing that challenges and obstacles remain in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session, Recognizing that the responsibility for the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and the outcome of the twenty-third special session rests primarily at the national level and that strengthened efforts are necessary in this respect, and reiterating that enhanced international cooperation is essential for full, effective and accelerated implementation

(a) Promoting actions and providing assistance to Member States, upon their request, for the full and effective implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, the outcome of the twenty-third special session of the General Assembly and other United Nations instruments, standards and resolutions that support, address and contribute to gender equality and the empowerment and advancement of women, as well as obligations under the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women.
