Intercultural dialogue between schools in different countries is being promoted through the UNESCO and DaimlerChrysler “Mondialogo School Contest”.

These have involved international firms such as J. Walter Thompson, Hewlett Packard, Hachette and DaimlerChrysler.

Intercultural dialogue, exchange and understanding among young people is also being promoted through the public-private partnership Mondialogo launched by UNESCO and DaimlerChrysler in 2003.

To promote access to technology as a tool for poverty eradication and sustainable development, networks (such as the Technology Knowledge Network, TecKnowNet) were established; partnerships were developed with universities and NGOs in the international engineering and the technology community field; information, learning materials, and a rightsbased approach were developed and disseminated; and project-based activities on engineering, technology and poverty eradication where promoted in conjunction with the DaimlerChryslerUNESCO Mondialogo Engineering Award, which began a second round in 2006-2007.

During the 32nd session of the General Conference, a widely attended meeting was organized to present to representatives of National Commissions four partnership initiatives that have both global and national dimensions: the partnership with L’Oréal for women in science; the Mondialogo partnership with DaimlerChrysler, as well as the partnerships with the World Association of Small and Medium Enterprises (WASME) and Rotary International.

An example from the intervention of the United States Federal Trade Commission in the case of the Chrysler Corporation bailout in 198016 shows that the competition argument does not always win, and also reiterates the policy balance issue.

New public-private partnerships have been formed, especially “Mondialogo” with DaimlerChrysler, which offer another entry point for concrete action with and by young people engaging in intercultural dialogue and exchange, funded largely through extrabudgetary resources.
