I hope that everybody will think calmly, put aside extreme emotions and treat everlasting social problems objectively and rationally.

What the author can see, however, is that the educational experts did not only evade expressing their standpoints on small-class teaching as the policy goal, but also willfully criticized the priority of the introduction of technical supporting measures such as number of students included, forms covered, training of teachers, flexibility of the system, etc. In fact these questions can be solved completely through discussions.

The Government, being the majority, bullies the minority ― this only happens inside the Council, as the Government will become the minority bullying the majority outside the Council ― The Government attempts to deprive people of their right to vote in by-elections by way of political suppression, or deprive Members or people interested in politics of their right to stand for the by-elections.

Seemingly the organizing body was responding to some previous criticisms that they used radical measures to fight for social harmony, which contradicted their vision.

However, a general direct election of the legislature is seen by people who know little about democratic politics as radical and aggressive political aspirations, and is considered a revolution rather than a reform.

These criticisms, some mild some severe, are really based on the misunderstanding of public opinion research work at large.

As for some other people, whenever they talk about the rule of law, they will only support some of the provisions of the Basic Law but oppose the implementation of others.

The extensive popularity enjoyed by Sam's concerts is due to the fact that people are pleased with the warmth, romance and joy of the atmosphere, which stand in sharp contrast against the sentiments of extremism, sorrow and confrontation stirred up by some in society.

Wherever there is disagreement with them, they would propose to delete all the expenditures.

And if the question asked by a radical political party in its opinion poll is simply whether one is for or against the Administration increasing its fees and charges, should the result of such a poll be counted as representing the real public opinion on a social problem?

At present, sincere dialogue should replace vigorous attacks, while pragmatic and rational discussion should take the place of emotional struggle.

A good deal of the time I find myself being criticized and my colleagues are criticized for being too aggressive in taking things forward, and for being too sharp in our interpretations of the agenda that we wish to pursue.

Mr Tommy CHEUNG obviously spoke only for the commercial and industrial sector just now, and his remarks were far too extreme and unreasonable, because we are not asking the SAR Government to move towards welfarism. If Members really think that the number of our holidays has already caught up with, or even surpassed, those in Britain and the United States ― during discussions on the issue of holidays, comparison with such countries is often made ― when we discuss this issue, some will invariably argue that employees in the United States and Europe cannot enjoy as many holidays as we can.

The first of my observations is that when certain members of our society talk about human rights, they only care about personal rights to the neglect of the rights of the general public.

I must stress that Mr CHIM and I indeed hold different views. If encouraging Hong Kong people to speak up is tantamount to trying to turn Hong Kong into an independent state, then many people are now trying to turn Hong Kong into an independent state.
