Deeply concerned about continuing acts of intolerance and violence based on religion or belief against individuals and members of religious communities and religious minorities around the world and about the limited progress that has been made in the elimination of all forms of intolerance and of discrimination based on religion or belief, and believing that further intensified efforts are therefore required to promote and protect the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion or belief and to eliminate all forms of hatred, intolerance and discrimination based on religion or belief, as also noted at the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, held in Durban, South Africa, from 31 August to 8 September 2001, as well as at the Durban Review Conference, held in Geneva from 20 to 24 April 2009

Reaffirming that everyone has the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion or belief, which includes the freedom to have or to adopt a religion or belief of one’s choice and the freedom, either alone or in community with others and in public or private, to manifest one’s religion or belief in teaching, practice, worship and observance

deeply alarmed at the rising trends towards discrimination based on religion or belief, including in some national policies, laws and administrative measures that stigmatize groups of people belonging to certain religions and beliefs under a variety of pretexts relating to security and irregular immigration, thereby legitimizing discrimination against them and consequently impairing their enjoyment of the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and impeding their ability to observe, practise and manifest their religion freely and without fear of coercion, violence or reprisal, and, in this context, emphasizing the importance of article 27 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.

Under the terms of paragraph 21 of resolution 13/16, the Human Rights Council requested the Special Rapporteur on contemporary forms of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia and related intolerance to report on all manifestations of defamation of religions, and in particular on the ongoing serious implications of Islamophobia, for the enjoyment of all rights by their followers, to the Council at its fifteenth session.

This instrument affirms that in those States in which ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities exist, persons belonging to such minorities may not be denied the right, in community with the other members of their group, to enjoy their own culture, to profess and practise their own religion, or to use their own language (Article 27).

(72) The Committee expresses concern at the ability of children belonging to minority groups, in particular of Nepalese ethnic origin, to enjoy their own culture, to profess and practice their own religion, or to use their own language.

Pakistan regretted that practitioners of one of the worst forms of racism, the incitement to racial and religious hatred through the denigration of religions and negative stereotypes of religions or races, could take refuge behind freedom of expression and opinion to attack with impunity the rights of persons professing a different religion, disregarding accepted international standards.

It referred to the paragraphs of the latter which relate to Palau’s geographical situation, languages spoken, religions practised by the population, the system of government, the composition of the population, the percentage of population living under poverty line, the status of consultations for the establishment of a National Human Rights Institution and the rights enshrined in its Constitution.

For instance, the Law on the Protection of Human Rights and Human Dignity on Biological and Medical Applications (Decree-Law 111/99) forbids discrimination on grounds of genetic ancestry, and the Law on the Freedom of Religion, Worship and Profession of Faith (Law 5/98/M) establishes that no one may be harmed, persecuted, deprived of rights or exempt from responsibilities or civic duties by reason of not professing any religion, or due to their convictions or religious practices.

discrimination, recommends that the State party ensure that the rights of religious minorities, particularly Jews and the Baha’is, to freely practice their religion, are protected by guaranteeing their security and freedom of worship at all times.

In addition, Chrys and Dom strive to establish partnerships with on-shore manufacturers and suppliers because they are practitioners of the Slow Goods movement, where objects take time to craft and a sustainable product quality is crucial.

All political parties, religious and secular alike, have a responsibility to their people to abide by the basic tenets upon which this body is founded: to reject violence; to uphold the rule of law; to respect the freedoms of speech, association and assembly; to safeguard religious freedom and tolerance; to protect the rights of women and minorities; to establish independent judiciaries; to promote a free press; to surrender power if defeated at the polls; and to avoid inciting conflicts that pull societies apart.

In those States in which ethnic, religious or linguistic minorities exist, persons belonging to such minorities shall not be denied the right, in community with the other members of their group, to enjoy their own culture, to profess and practise their own religion, or to use their own language.

(b) Respect the right of members of registered and unregistered religions to freely exercise their freedom of religion, review existing registration regulations and practices in order to ensure the right of all persons to manifest their religion or belief, alone or in community with others and in public or in private regardless of registration status

The Committee urges the State party to uphold the freedom of religion enshrined in the State party’s Constitution and respect the right of members of registered and unregistered religious groups to freely exercise their religion and culture.
