The preparation of the study was overseen by my Special Adviser on Gender Issues and Advancement of Women in close cooperation with the Inter-Agency Task Force on Women, Peace and Security.

In addition, CONTRAMINAS, with international cooperation, has been undertaking work to update existing information on victims to include more information and a needs assessment.

New areas that were explored included social, behavioural and psychological analysis of the impacts of disasters; champions for disaster risk reduction; investment for key infrastructure to increase disaster resiliency; strengthening of local capacity for disaster risk reduction; and progress made in ESCAP-related regional mechanisms.

In that context it was pointed out that, in addition to making a crucial contribution to the fight against immunity per se, the Council’s establishment of the ad hoc tribunals also had a galvanizing effect at the national level: the existence and work of ICTY spurred the establishment of national war crimes courts in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia; and that of ICTR led to considerable pressure to reform the Rwandan justice system.

In view of the increasingly important role of South-South cooperation in least developed countries’ development, we underline the need to fully harness the opportunities offered by South-South cooperation as a complement to, but not a substitute for, North-South cooperation.

She assured the Commission of the full commitment of WHO to the work of Codex and Codex-related matters which are an important contribution to achieve these goals and thereby improving global public health.

In 1998, at its twentieth special session, devoted to countering the world drug problem, the General Assembly adopted the Political Declaration (resolution S-20/2, annex), the Declaration on the Guiding Principles of Drug Demand Reduction (resolution S-20/3, annex) and measures to enhance international cooperation to counter the world drug problem (resolutions S-20/4 A to E).

The Subcommittee is conscious that its work must be of practical use in addressing the needs of diverse systems and do so in a way which properly engages with their specificities.

She worked with other consultants to conduct a study on the processes for the domestication of CEDAW and the African Women’s Protocol in Nigeria, Senegal, Niger, other West African countries, Uganda, India, Morocco and South Africa (2008).

Egypt stressed the importance of coordination between the United Nations and the regional organizations in efforts to implement the Plan of Action, as well as cooperation between the various actors within the United Nations system.

The contribution of South-South cooperation to the Istanbul Programme of Action should be recognized, including by promoting initiatives that are beneficial to least developed countries, taking into account, among other things, economic complementarities among developing countries.

In replying to the statement of the Observer from the OIE, delegations pointed out that strengthened collaboration with OIE was important to ensure that the risk-based approach be applied in the pre-harvest sector of the food chain, especially in addressing the control of microorganisms in animal products, currently undertaken by the Committee on Food Hygiene.

A host of concrete proposals were suggested to the coordinators of the Dialogue, such as: dialogue and networking among universities; dialogue among young scientists, involving UNESCO chairholders in dialogue activities; dialogue among student journalists and seasoned media practitioners from both regions; the holding of youth forums; reactivation of the Committee for the Translation of Literary Works and increase in the translation of Arabic works into European languages; a comparative study of school textbooks; dialogue involving professionals from cultural industries; the organization of an interregional conference on the image of Arab-Islamic culture in European history books.
