Special Olympics provides people with intellectual disabilities continuing opportunities to realize their potential, develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, and experience joy and friendship.

I called upon both sides to show leadership, courage and responsibility to realize the aspirations of both peoples, and encouraged the efforts of the United States in that regard.

I firmly believe that justice and truth will shine in every corner of our country. What I can do now is to hang on persistently, not for any special cause, but for peace of my own conscience and soul, as well as for a quality society where our children will live; and, more importantly, for our nation, so that our country can continue to exist in this world in good health.

Lastly, while many countries were satisfied at the fact that UNESCO had linked the notions of culture and development, they thought that that theme had lost something of its force in document 31 C/4, bearing in mind the great number of recommendations made by the World Commission on Culture and Development and the Action Plan of the Stockholm Conference.

Last but not least, we will motivate the community in different ways to help the individual and his family adopt a healthy lifestyle so that the community, as it grows old together, will do so in good health.

Mr. President, and with your customary leadership and courage, this body will break out of its stagnation, and that a new era — an era of negotiations able to weigh the security needs of all members — will be able to be reflected in the report of the Conference on Disarmament at the end of this year’s session.

A host of concrete proposals were suggested to the coordinators of the Dialogue, such as: dialogue and networking among universities; dialogue among young scientists, involving UNESCO chairholders in dialogue activities; dialogue among student journalists and seasoned media practitioners from both regions; the holding of youth forums; reactivation of the Committee for the Translation of Literary Works and increase in the translation of Arabic works into European languages; a comparative study of school textbooks; dialogue involving professionals from cultural industries; the organization of an interregional conference on the image of Arab-Islamic culture in European history books.
