For its consideration of the item, the Council had before it the report of the Secretary-General on the theme of the coordination segment: the role of the United Nations system in implementing the internationally agreed goals and commitments in regard to sustainable development (E/2009/56) and the updated report of the Secretary-General on the role of the Council in the integrated and coordinated implementation of the outcomes of and follow-up to major United Nations conferences and summits, in light of relevant General Assembly resolutions, including resolution 61/16 (A/64/87-E/2009/89).

9.1 The Committee has considered the communication in the light of all information made available to it by the parties concerned, in accordance with article 22, paragraph 4, of the Convention.

Overall target By 2014, at least 80 per cent of affected country Parties, subregional and regional entities have formulated/revised a NAP/SRAP/RAP aligned to The Strategy.

Also at that session, the General Assembly requested the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice to establish, in line with paragraph 49 of the Salvador Declaration¸ an open-ended intergovernmental expert group, to be convened between the twentieth and twenty-first sessions of the Commission, to exchange information on best practices, as well as national legislation and existing international law, and the revision of existing United Nations standard minimum rules for the treatment of prisoners so that they reflect recent advances in correctional science and best practices, with a view to making recommendations to the Commission on possible next steps (resolution 65/230).

In its decision 2008/217, the Council decided, on an exceptional basis, to extend to non-governmental organizations and civil society entities that were not in consultative status with the Council but that had received accreditation to the World Summit on the Information Society an invitation to participate in the work of the Commission on Science and Technology for Development at its twelfth and thirteenth sessions, and invited the Committee on Non-Governmental Organizations to consider, as expeditiously as possible, the applications of such entities in accordance with the rules of procedure of the Economic and Social Council.

The second part of the report covers developments in selected areas of regional and interregional cooperation, including additional policy matters addressed during the regional commission ministerial sessions, efforts to promote coherence at the regional level, including through the Regional Coordination Mechanisms convened by the regional commissions as mandated by the Council, cooperation with non-United Nations regional organizations to promote development, and ongoing interregional cooperation among the regional commissions through the production of joint analytical products, the hosting of joint events and the implementation of joint projects, as part of their efforts in promoting South-South cooperation.

They can also enable the next of kin to honour the dead in conformity with the precepts of their culture and religion.

In its resolution 65/230, the General Assembly requested the Commission to establish, in line with paragraph 42 of the Salvador Declaration, an open-ended intergovernmental expert group, to be convened prior to the twentieth session of the Commission, to conduct a comprehensive study of the problem of cybercrime and responses to it by Member States, the international community and the private sector, including the exchange of information on national legislation, best practices, technical assistance and international cooperation, with a view to examining options to strengthen existing responses and to propose new national and international legal or other responses to cybercrime.
