The 35 paintings on its walls, including St. Louis at the Battle of Taillebourg by Eugène Delacroix, Henri IV entering Paris by François Gérard and The Battle of Fontenoy  by Horace Vernet, illustrate the most important events in the military history of France, from the Battle of Tolbiac (496) to Wagram (1809).

Several refinements were introduced to that end: (a) a concretization of the type of activities to be undertaken in UNESCO’s domains, as defined by the International Ministerial Conference on the Dialogue among Civilizations, held in New Delhi, India, in June 2003; (b) a move from the global to the regional arena, exemplified by the “Regional Forum on Dialogue among Civilizations”, held in Ohrid, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, in August 2003; and (c) the emphasis on the need for multi-stakeholder involvement, including civil society, at various levels as well as the need to mobilize the entire range of UNESCO mechanisms and networks – field offices, National Commissions, chairs and fellowships.

The Chief Officer reported that she and various professional staff had attended a number of meetings since the 54th Meeting, including that of TEAP in Vienna, Austria, to provide information on Committee decisions and funding policies relevant to preparation of the report on the 2009-2011 replenishment of the Multilateral Fund; a joint meeting of the English-speaking African and West Asia networks in Cairo, Egypt; the meeting of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council in Washington D.C., United States of America; a thematic meeting on metered-dose inhalers (MDIs) in Buenos Aires, Argentina, a meeting on HCFC phase-out management plans in Ohrid, The former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia; and the 28th Meeting of the OEWG in Bangkok, Thailand.

The director of the organization’s Serbia office testified on the issue of abuses in Serbia during the forty-first session of the Committee against Torture, held in Geneva in November 2008, and at the high-level conference on the prevention of torture in Serbia, held in Belgrade in March 2009.

This was followed in 1975, with an international workshop in environmental education, held in Belgrade and which resulted in a framework of understanding on environmental education, later referred to as the Belgrade Charter, with goals, objectives and guiding principles for environmental education programmes.

The workshops were held in Belgrade on 19 and 20 May 2010, and participants included representatives of six local self-governments, namely Kragujevac, Kraljevo, Nis, Vranje, Leskovac and Novi Sad, representatives of various national institutions, such as line ministries, Office of the Ombudsman, Serbian Roads public company, national Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) team, as well as representatives of the City of Belgrade.

The impacts on species, habitats, migratory patterns of species, and landscape were noted and the ministers committed to continue supporting the Pan-European Ecological Network.

The last one, Tbilisi+30, was held in 2007 in Ahmedabad, India, and drew attention to a new sense of urgency and the need for a new, broader approach to environmental education in a very different social, economic and political climate, and knowledge environment to that of 1977, when the Tbilisi Declaration was formulated.

During the reporting period, one session of the sub-working group on forensics and one session of the Working Group on Missing Persons took place in Belgrade; the meetings were held in a spirit of cooperation.

Together with the Commonwealth, a regional expert meeting on international cooperation in criminal matters between civil law and common law African countries was organized in Yaoundé from 16 to 18 February, and attended by participants from Angola, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Djibouti, Ghana, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Senegal and the United Republic of Tanzania.

This was followed by a meeting the same day with Abdul Wahid, the leader of the Sudan Liberation Movement, whose movement is predominant in the area, who indicated a willingness to consider the matter.

On 22 and 23 February 2012, an international expert seminar on the relationship between NHRIs and Parliaments was held in Belgrade, organized by OHCHR, the International Coordinating Committee of NHRIs, the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the Protector of Citizens of the Republic of Serbia, with the support of the United Nations country team.
