Therefore, it is important that States strongly condemn all forms of violence against women and refrain from invoking any custom, tradition or religious consideration to avoid their obligation with respect to its elimination and that the criminal justice system recognize violence against women as a genderrelated problem and as an expression of power and inequality.

Other key aspects of sustainable development are the effective management of natural resources as well as the connection between cultural and biological diversity, largely illustrated in the rich practices of local and indigenous people on all continents.

Human Rights Watch underlined the need for the Government to make girls’ education a priority, strengthen measures to prevent violence against women, promote awareness-raising on issues such as child marriage, and avoid entrenching in the law discriminatory practices against women, such as the Shia personal status law, which in its amended form allegedly included many egregious articles.

The Committee shares the concern raised by the Committee for the Elimination of Discrimination against Women regarding the persistence of harmful traditional practices in the State party, including female genital mutilation, breast ironing and early and forced marriages which violate the rights of girls and women, undermine their status and dignity, and have a particularly negative impact on their health.
