(e) To review and, where appropriate, revise, amend or abolish any laws, regulations, policies, practices and customs that discriminate against women or have a discriminatory impact on women, and to ensure that provisions of multiple legal systems, where they exist, comply with international human rights obligations, commitments and principles, in particular the principle of non-discrimination.

Nature is a common element of all major religions and traditional knowledge, and associated customs are important for creating a sense of belonging.

Life-cycle rituals – birth; rites of passage; wedding, divorce and funerary rituals; games and sports; kinship and ritual kinship ceremonies; settlement patterns; culinary arts; designation of status and prestige ceremonies; seasonal ceremonies; gender-specific social practices; practices relating to hunting, fishing and gathering; geonymic and patronymic nomenclature; silk culture and crafts (production [fabrication], sewing, dyeing, cloth designs); wood carving; textiles; body-art (tattooing, piercing, painting).

The Government provided information about its plans to work in the following areas: (a) setting “tolerance standards” for popular media productions, including a ban on mentioning ethnic backgrounds in crime reporting, a mandatory quota for broadcasts of positive news accounts featuring the peoples of the Russian Federation in the federal media, and producing films and broadcasts for children casting the various peoples of the Russian Federation in positive roles; (b) establishing inter-ethnic studies in higher educational institutions; (c) conducting comprehensive lessons on the culture, traditions and customs of various ethnic groups by members of those groups in general educational establishments; and (d) raising awareness among the young about the ethnic diversity of Russian society.

Therefore, it is important that States strongly condemn all forms of violence against women and refrain from invoking any custom, tradition or religious consideration to avoid their obligation with respect to its elimination and that the criminal justice system recognize violence against women as a genderrelated problem and as an expression of power and inequality.

Other key aspects of sustainable development are the effective management of natural resources as well as the connection between cultural and biological diversity, largely illustrated in the rich practices of local and indigenous people on all continents.

There are other food taboos: Mothers are not used to adding green leaves when cooking baby food, while these are good sources of vitamin A in our community!

She called for closer partnerships between countries contributing troops and those providing equipment, while more attention should be paid to training peacekeepers, with emphasis on respect for local customs.

The State party should also redouble its efforts to raise awareness about the need to end this practice.

The forest instrument includes substantial recognition for the rights and needs of local and indigenous communities and addresses the protection and use of traditional forest-related knowledge and practices in sustainable forest management, and the need for enhanced access to forest resources and relevant markets to support livelihoods of forest-dependent indigenous communities, living in and outside forest areas.

A key finding has been the importance of human rights education, including the opportunity for communities to discuss rights and relate them to existing social practices.

The Committee also recommends that the State party undertake effective measures to implement its legislation on discrimination against women, and information campaigns and awareness-raising programmes to eliminate the prevailing attitudes and practices that perpetuate the inferior role of women.

Moreover, the Talmud was further augmented by the inclusion within it of the views which the scholars expressed in the course of their public, judicial, and other activities, as well as by the data regarding their private lives and their religious practises which were discussed and memorized in the academies.

In 2009, the General Assembly adopted resolution 64/145 on the girl child, focusing on child marriage and calling on States to take measures to address the root causes of child and forced marriages, to raise awareness of the negative aspects of such practices and to strengthen legislation and policies to protect the rights of the child, especially the girl child.

The Government of the Republic of the Niger declares that the provisions of article 2 (d) and (f), article 5 (a) and (b), article 15, paragraph 4, and article 16, paragraph 1 (c), (e) and (g), concerning family relations, cannot be applied immediately, as they are contrary to existing customs and practices which, by their nature, can be modified only with the passage of time and the evolution of society and cannot, therefore, be abolished by an act of authority.
