Women and girls still face multiple forms of discrimination, which are often the result of laws, policies, customs and practices that restrict women’s opportunities to participate fully in development processes and in public, political and private life.

Life-cycle rituals – birth; rites of passage; wedding, divorce and funerary rituals; games and sports; kinship and ritual kinship ceremonies; settlement patterns; culinary arts; designation of status and prestige ceremonies; seasonal ceremonies; gender-specific social practices; practices relating to hunting, fishing and gathering; geonymic and patronymic nomenclature; silk culture and crafts (production [fabrication], sewing, dyeing, cloth designs); wood carving; textiles; body-art (tattooing, piercing, painting).

However, cultural beliefs and practices and the interests of practitioners made its full implementation challenging.

The Government provided information about its plans to work in the following areas: (a) setting “tolerance standards” for popular media productions, including a ban on mentioning ethnic backgrounds in crime reporting, a mandatory quota for broadcasts of positive news accounts featuring the peoples of the Russian Federation in the federal media, and producing films and broadcasts for children casting the various peoples of the Russian Federation in positive roles; (b) establishing inter-ethnic studies in higher educational institutions; (c) conducting comprehensive lessons on the culture, traditions and customs of various ethnic groups by members of those groups in general educational establishments; and (d) raising awareness among the young about the ethnic diversity of Russian society.

Therefore, it is important that States strongly condemn all forms of violence against women and refrain from invoking any custom, tradition or religious consideration to avoid their obligation with respect to its elimination and that the criminal justice system recognize violence against women as a genderrelated problem and as an expression of power and inequality.

And the common law can of course be amended by way of legislation, by convention or by refinement through the court's application of the rules of equity.

Other key aspects of sustainable development are the effective management of natural resources as well as the connection between cultural and biological diversity, largely illustrated in the rich practices of local and indigenous people on all continents.

Nature is a common element of all major religions and traditional knowledge, and associated customs are important for creating a sense of belonging.
