The following institutes of the United Nations crime prevention and criminal justice programme network were represented at the meeting: United Nations Interregional Crime and Justice Research Institute; African Institute for the Prevention of Crime and the Treatment of Offenders; International Scientific and Professional Advisory Council; and Raoul Wallenberg Institute of Human Rights and Humanitarian Law.

With a view to promoting access and the right to education, UNESCO, with the Raoul Wallenberg Institute for Human Rights and Humanitarian Law, prepared a manual on human rights education and the minorities, and increased its collaboration with the European Association for Education Law and Policy.

Having finished eight years of school I went to the Architectural Technical Secondary School (college now) in the Architecture Department. Then I continued to study architecture at LISI, but two years later in 1989 I became interested in contemporary art and started to visit Berlin where Professor Ulrich Weinberg introduced me to graphic arts at the АРТ+СОМ Institute.

The University of Senghor in Egypt, with assistance from UNESCO, UNIDROIT and the Agence intergouvernmentale de la francophonie, published in December 2001 a book and CD-Rom “droit et Patrimoine en Afrique” which is a compilation of selected, current cultural heritage legislation of the following countries: Algeria, Angola, Botswana, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Comores, Congo, Cote d’Ivoire, Democratic Republic of Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Gabon, Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Kenya, Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Morocco, Maurice, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Senegal, Seychelles, South Africa, Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

Following the meeting, the Council President, Ambassador U. Joy Ogwu of Nigeria, read a press statement (SC/9992) in which the Security Council welcomed the Kabul Conference communiqué, and recognized the conference as an important milestone in the Kabul process.

(Costa Rica) ( spoke in Spanish): The convening of a joint debate on Security Council reform and the report of the Security Council to the General Assembly (A/64/2) is a wise initiative because, in the light of the report, concrete aspects of the Council’s reform stand out with greater clarity and the everlasting discussion on the number and quality of its members is set aside, at least momentarily.

On the other hand, although unable to reach a decision on the Ahtisaari report, referred to it in March 2007, the Council nevertheless encouraged attempts at mediation between the Parties, in particular when it decided to send a mission, made up of members of the Council and led by Johan C. Verbeke, representative of Belgium, to Belgrade and Pristina, in April 2007 (S/2007/220 of 20 April 2007), and when it supported the attempts by the troika (made up of the European Union, United States and Russia) created by the Contact Group to reconcile the two Parties (from July to December 2007).
