The airborne component: reduction announced [...] [...]

The Advisory Committee recalls that in document A/64/6 (Sect. 34), the Secretary-General submitted a preliminary proposed programme budget for section 34 of the regular budget and the gross budget for jointly financed activities, pending the completion of the comprehensive management review of the organization of the Department of Safety and Security that was recommended in June 2008 by the Independent Panel on Safety and Security of United Nations Personnel and Premises Worldwide and the submission of the response of the United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination to the recommendations of the Independent Panel.

The Executive Board, at its 171st session, invited the Committee on Conventions and Recommendations to examine the list of these conventions and recommendations, to consider the advisability of continuing to monitor all of these instruments or only of some of them, identifying, in particular, the priority recommendations; to propose new procedures specifically for the monitoring of the implementation of UNESCO conventions and recommendations for which no specific institutional mechanism is provided, and to devise harmonized model guidelines for conventions which are monitored by the Committee (171 EX/Decision 27).

As the lead agency for UN-DESD, UNESCO has strengthened the capacity of the Ministry of National Education in preparing Indonesia’s programmes for the Decade, and in planning for launching of UN-DESD.

UNESCO is also the deputy lead for the education sector and an active member in the following sector outcome teams: agriculture and food security, governance, water and sanitation, protection, and economic recovery and diversification.

(c) Serving within the United Nations system as the primary focal point and global lead for police and law enforcement matters, as appropriate, both in the context of Department-led operations and missions led by the Department of Political Affairs, as requested and feasible.

A host of concrete proposals were suggested to the coordinators of the Dialogue, such as: dialogue and networking among universities; dialogue among young scientists, involving UNESCO chairholders in dialogue activities; dialogue among student journalists and seasoned media practitioners from both regions; the holding of youth forums; reactivation of the Committee for the Translation of Literary Works and increase in the translation of Arabic works into European languages; a comparative study of school textbooks; dialogue involving professionals from cultural industries; the organization of an interregional conference on the image of Arab-Islamic culture in European history books.

The net decrease reflects reductions under most objects of expenditure, including $242,800 under consultants, mainly as a consequence of the increased use of in-house expertise, where possible; $104,700 under experts, resulting mainly from concerted efforts to combine meetings or reduce the number of experts and the duration of meetings, whenever possible; $121,200 under travel of staff, mainly attributable to increased utilization of video conferencing, combining trips and/or reducing the duration of travel as much as possible; $460,800 under contractual services, primarily owing to increased utilization of electronic means of disseminating publications; $111,000 under furniture and equipment, reflecting reduced requirements for the replacement of furniture and office equipment resulting from extending the lifespan of furniture and equipment; and $781,600 under grants and contributions, mainly owing to the termination of the contract with the International Computing Centre.

Save as disclosed above, as at the Latest Practical Date, the Directors are not aware of any other person who had an interest or short position in the Shares or underlying Shares of the Company which would fall to be disclosed to the Company under the provisions of Divisions 2 and 3 of Part XV of the SFO, or who was, directly or indirectly, interested in 10% or more of the nominal value of any class of share capital, or options in respect of such capital, carrying rights to vote in all circumstances at general meetings of any other member of the Group.
