Stand-alone UNESCO activities: The EMIS programme of the UNESCO Dar es Salaam office started as a stand-alone project supported by funds from the European Union (EU) but is incorporated now into the joint programming in Tanzania, and is contributing substantively to evidence-based planning in the education sector in Tanzania by enabling education planners to base their projections on solid evidence.

In the report of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights on the International workshop on natural resource companies, indigenous peoples and human rights: setting a framework for consultation, benefitsharing and dispute resolution, held in Moscow, in 2008 (see A/HRC/EMRIP/2009/5), it was suggested that the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples could be used to orient negotiations among States, the private sector and indigenous peoples on the basis of recognized human rights standards for indigenous peoples; the report also pointed out that various corporations, including those participating in the United Nations Global Compact, had developed relevant guidelines and practices … aimed at improving their relations with indigenous peoples and local communities.

In addition, the Secretariat has prepared, for submission to the Group, a version of the guidelines and blueprint that has been updated on the basis of the merged document and reflecting the decisions taken by the Conference on the terms of reference of the Review Mechanism (resolution 3/1, annex).

The Delegation of Canada, speaking as Chair of the CCFL, informed the Commission that the issue had been discussed extensively in the CCFL and that the Committee had taken into account the information presented by WHO at the session as well as the intervention and reservation of Malaysia but recognized that trans fatty acids were not a public health concern in all jurisdictions and thus had agreed to add a footnote on trans fatty acids.

The strengthened focus on transnational organized crime in the report of the Secretary-General entitled “Delivering justice: programme of action to strengthen the rule of law at the national and international level” (A/66/749), which will be discussed at a high-level meeting of the sixty-seventh session of the General Assembly, is another step towards highlighting the need for effective law enforcement cooperation among countries.
