In addition, Tajikistan reported that it is preparing to conduct a needs assessment of landmine and other ERW victims in mine affected districts withthe main goal being to establish a functional victim information system (VIS), which would comply with the Information Management System for Mine Action (IMSMA) standards and become a systematic and reliable mechanism at the district and oblast level.

The specific objectives of the Meeting were: (a) to examine the trends that are apparent in the worldwide development of GNSS and how they will affect the growing population of users of satellite-positioning technologies; (b) to review ongoing and planned initiatives as well as case studies that could contribute to the wider use of GNSS technology and its applications, including the possibility of one or more national, regional and international pilot projects in which interested institutions could incorporate the use of GNSS technology; (c) identify a functional partnership that could be established to promote innovative GNSS-enabled applications, as well as recommend how such a partnership could be established through voluntary actions that could include Governments, international organizations, research and development institutions, academia and other relevant stakeholders; and (d) define recommendations and findings to be forwarded for consideration by ICG and its working groups.

Ms. Anderson ended her presentation with a recommendation to the Committee to consider issuing a general comment on education in emergencies following the day of general discussion and that the Committee, the Special Rapporteur on the right to education, States parties, NGOs and United Nations agencies haveajoint follow-up meeting onthe issue annually to assess the impact of their recommendations and to followup on them.

The Rio Group urges all members of the Conference to demonstrate the political will necessary to ensure the start, without delay, of its substantive work through the adoption and implementation of a balanced and comprehensive programme of work that moves the nuclear disarmament agenda forward, including negotiations on a nuclear weapons convention, a universal, unconditional and legally binding instrument on negative security assurances for non-nuclear-weapon States, the prevention of an arms race in outer space and a multilateral and non-discriminatory treaty banning the production of fissile material for nuclear weapons or other nuclear explosive devices.
