With the support of the Secretariat, the first Transboundary Biosphere Reserve (TBR) in Africa was established by Benin, Burkina Faso and Niger (the “W” Biosphere Reserve) following the recommendations for the establishment and functioning of TBR approved by the MAB Council in 2000.

At the 10th meeting, on 16 October, the representative of the United States of America, on behalf of Afghanistan, Albania, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Croatia, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Haiti, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Madagascar, Monaco, the Netherlands, Norway, Palau, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Turkey, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Compliance with non-proliferation, arms limitation and disarmament agreements and commitments” (A/C.1/63/L.32).

Program 22 will also continue to liaise closely with Program 26 (Internal Oversight) to ensure that: (a) external, independent evaluations complement and inform organizational performance assessment mechanisms; (b) gaps in internal controls are identified and addressed in a timely manner; and, (c) there is adequate servicing ofoversight bodies.
