Malaysia is a federation consisting of East Malaysia （the northern part of Borneo, including Sabah and Sarawak） and West Malaysia （the southern part of the Malay Peninsula, formerly Malaya）. The two parts of Malaysia are separated from each other by 650 km (400 miles) of the South China Sea. Malaysia federated as an independent Commonwealth state in 1963; Singapore withdrew in 1965.
