The northern third of the country lies within the Arctic Circle. Long an area of Swedish-Russian rivalry, Finland was ceded to Russia in 1809, becoming an independent republic after the Russian Revolution. Wars with the USSR were fought in 1939- 40. Finland joined the European Union in 1995.
