Ypres/ˈiːprə, 〈法〉ipʀ/a town in NW Belgium, near the border with France, in the province of West Flanders; pop. 34,812 (2008). Ypres was the scene of some of the bitterest fighting of the First World War (see YPRES, BATTLE OF).
