Woolf, (Adeline) Virginia (1882-1941), English novelist, essayist, and critic; born Adeline Virginia Stephen. A member of the Bloomsbury Group, she gained recognition with Jacob's Room (1922). Subsequent novels, such as Mrs Dalloway (1925) and To the Lighthouse (1927), characterized by their poetic Impressionism, established her as an exponent of modernism.
