Virgin Islands
- a group of Caribbean islands at the eastern extremity of the Greater Antilles, divided between British and US administration维尔京群岛(一组加勒比海岛屿, 位于大安的列斯群岛东端, 分别由英国和美国管理)。
The islands were settled, mainly in the 17th century, by British and Danish sugar planters, who introduced African slaves. The British Virgin Islands consists of about forty islands in the north-east of the group; pop. 16, 750 (est. 1991); capital, Road Town (on Tortola). The remaining islands (about fifty) make up the US unincorporated territory of the Virgin Islands; pop. 101, 800 (1990); capital, Charlotte Amalie (on St Thomas).
