Dominican Republic
/dəˈmɪnɪkən/a country in the Caribbean occupying the eastern part of the island of Hispaniola; pop. 9,650, 100 (est. 2009); official language, Spanish; capital, Santo Domingo. The Dominican Republic is the former Spanish colony of Santo Domingo, the part of Hispaniola which Spain retained when it ceded the western portion (now Haiti) to France in 1697. It was proclaimed a republic in 1844.
