Crompton1, Richmal (1890-1969), English writer; pseudonym of Richmal Crompton Lamburn. She made her name with Just William (1922), a collection of stories for children about a mischievous schoolboy, William Brown. Crompton2, Samuel (1753-1827), English inventor. Famed for his invention of the spinning mule, he lacked the means to obtain a patent and sold his rights to a Bolton industrialist for £67.
