Tinbergen1, Jan (1903-94), Dutch economist. He shared the first Nobel Prize for Economics (1969) with Ragnar Frisch for his pioneering work on econometrics. Tinbergen2, Nikolaas (1907-88), Dutch zoologist. From his studies he found that much animal behaviour was innate and stereotyped, and he introduced the concept of displacement activity. Tinbergen shared a Nobel Prize in 1973 with Karl von Frisch and Konrad Lorenz.
