Albania

Previously part of the Byzantine and later the Ottoman Empire, Albania gained independence in 1912. It became a Stalinist regime under Enver Hoxha after the Second World War, remaining extremely isolationist in policy and outlook until 1992. Following a period of political instability a democratically elected government was brought to power in 2001.
