Old English cherubin, ultimately (via Latin and Greek) from Hebrew kěrūḇ， plural kěrūḇīm. A rabbinic folk etymology， which explains the Hebrew singular form as representing Aramaic kē-raḇyā 'like a child'， led to the representation of the cherub as a child.
