Tainan
/taɪˈnɑːn/- a city on the SW coast of Taiwan; pop. 764,700 (est. 2007). Settled from mainland China in 1590, it is one of the oldest cities on the island and was its capital from 1684 until 1885, when it was replaced by Taipei. Its original name was Taiwan, the name later given to the whole island.台南（台湾西南海岸的一个城市, 2007年估计人口764,700; 1590年中国大陆人来此定居, 它是台湾岛上最古老的城市之一, 1684-1885年曾是台湾首府, 后被台北取代; 原名台湾, 后来台湾成为整座岛屿的名称）。
